tourist and looking for something interesting and relatively new to take up a good part of your day? Or maybe you are already a resident of the formerly white city and would like to explore a bit.In either case, you should consider this new (and I hate to use this term, but...) tourist attraction which takes you back to the good old days of henequen production. When I say good old days, of course, I am talking about the whites that ran the haciendas, not the Mayans 'employed' there as slaves.

I haven't been to Sotuta as yet due to its cost, but a visit to the Ake ruins will get you a free look at working henequen presses and rope factory. You also get to see a Mayan ruin. The old henequen factory is partially falling down but was in operation on one of my visits. The rope factory was running both times. It is not set up for tourists but makes for a nice day trip.

After another visit to Sotuta, I would like to reiterate that this day trip is definitely worth it. And I would like to mention that the cost $250.00 not only seems fair enough but that we should all(locals and visitors alike) not only applaud but support with our pocketbooks, efforts like this to create genuine, non-cheesy, non government tourist attractions. The owner (Mr. Lübke) has created a unique and valuable time capsule that is both educational and entertaining.
